I was having dinner with a few friends when one guy started telling an incredibly long story. He kept interrupting everyone, correcting tiny details, and restarting whenever someone stopped paying attention. I secretly opened our group chat and typed: “If he explains this one more time, I’m climbing out of the bathroom window.” Then I sent it directly to him. His phone lit up on the table between us. I watched him pick it up, read the message, and slowly raise his eyes toward me. My brain offered no useful response, so I looked down at my own phone and pretended to be surprised. He turned the screen around and asked, “Was this meant for someone else?” For reasons I still don’t understand, I said, “No, but you weren’t supposed to receive it.” Nobody spoke for several seconds. I spent the rest of dinner being extremely interested in the salt shaker while everyone else discussed anything except what had just happened.
