One rainy morning, my regular bus never arrived. After waiting for twenty minutes, I saw another bus approaching and ran toward it without checking the route. The doors opened, so I climbed aboard carrying a coffee, a laptop bag, and all the confidence of someone who believed they had finally solved a problem. Every passenger was wearing the same school uniform. I still didn’t understand. I tapped my travel card against an empty plastic panel near the driver and asked, “Does this stop near the city center?” The driver stared at me and said, “This is a school bus.” Behind me, approximately thirty teenagers became completely silent. I looked around, finally noticed the backpacks and uniforms, and said, “Right. That explains the atmosphere.” The driver reopened the doors. As I stepped back into the rain, someone near the rear of the bus shouted, “Have a good day at school!” The entire bus started laughing just before it pulled away. I arrived late to work, soaked, and with absolutely no desire to explain why.
