Our office sent a survey about a new catered lunch. I meant to message a coworker privately, but I replied to the company-wide email instead. My review said the sandwich had "the texture of a damp instruction manual" and that the sauce appeared to have been applied by someone afraid of flavor. The catering manager was included in the thread. So were the executives who had chosen the menu. I realized what happened when people started reacting with thumbs-up icons. Ten minutes later, the catering manager replied to everyone: "Feedback received. We will increase both flavor and courage." At the next lunch, a bottle of hot sauce was placed at my seat with a printed label that said EMERGENCY COURAGE. The sandwiches were genuinely better, which means my worst professional email technically produced results. I still refuse to use Reply All for anything, including messages specifically asking me to reply all.
