I had a terrible habit of chewing on pens during class. One afternoon, I was staring out the window with a blue pen between my teeth when I suddenly tasted something bitter. Before I could investigate, the teacher called my name and asked me to explain the answer written on the board. I knew the answer, but when I opened my mouth, one of my classmates gasped. The pen had leaked everywhere. My tongue, lips, and front teeth were completely blue. Instead of explaining what had happened, I panicked and kept my mouth closed. The teacher interpreted my silence as disrespect and asked me the question again. I responded by shaking my head while covering my face. Eventually, the student beside me said, “I think his pen exploded in his mouth.” The whole class turned around at once. The teacher sent me to the bathroom, where I discovered that rinsing with water only transformed the ink into a bright blue ring around my mouth. I looked like I had eaten an entire marker, and the stain survived until the next morning.
